Sunless Tanning

How does it work?

DHA is the main ingredient in sunless tanning sprays. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation warns against using any sunless tanning product that does not list DHA as the active ingredient [source: Bank]. DHA is a colorless sugar derived from plants such as sugar beets. It has been used to treat medical problems such as skin-pigmentation disorders for more than 50 years. It’s also been approved by the U.S. FDA for cosmetic use for decades. It was first used in a tanning product by Coppertone in the 1960s, although that early attempt tended to turn people orange. DHA products have improved since then, partly because the refining process is better.

DHA has an enzymatic reaction with the amino acids in the outer layer, or epidermis (stratum corneum), of the skin, causing the dead skin cells to turn temporarily dark. Because it affects the outer layer and dead skin,  it sheds, and unlike UV machines or the sun, it does not damage any tissue.

The machine we will use is a Fuji HVLP system and is top of the line for spray tans. The client will have a consultation and decide on how dark they want to be. A barrier cream is applied to hands and feet to prevent build up of color, as these areas tend to be drier and soak it up faster. The solution is mixed and put in a cup attached to an air pressure hand piece and is sprayed on the client until desired color is achieved.

Below is more information you need to know:

AGE RESTRICTIONS:

In order to receive spray tanning services the client must be at least 13 years of age or older. For those between the ages of 13 and 18, we require parental consent and the presence of a parent during treatment in the treatment room.

CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS:

Women can be nude or wearing a bottom bikini as desired (We will provide disposable bottoms but if you want to be covered on top, you will need to bring something to wear). Men are required to be covered in private parts, whether tanning parts of body or full body. You should bring dark, loose clothing to wear home and not put on socks or boots when you leave. Slip on shoes or flip flops are ideal.

PREPARATION :

Please shower prior to treatment and exfoliate but DO NOT APPLY any creams, deodorants, lotions, oils, or perfumes prior to session. These will prevent absorption of the solution and will discolor the skin. Any shaving or waxing should be done 1-2 days prior to tanning.

POST TREATMENT:

For aftercare you may not shower and skin may not come into contact with any water or liquids for at least 8 hours. Water will wash the solution off and the tan will not develop. In the shower the bronzer will rinse off and the tan will be revealed. The tan will last from 5-10 days depending on home care. Shaving, scrubbing and using harsh body washes or soaps will diminish the tan because they exfoliate the skin. Daily moisturizing and mild liquid body washes are recommended.

MEDICAL NOTES:

If you are pregnant you must be passed the first trimester and have a doctor’s note with you confirming you can proceed with tanning. If you have diabetes or asthma or other respiratory problems, you must have a doctor’s note as well clearing you for the treatment. For BRIDES, we always recommend a trial tan first prior to the actual session.
