Fact Vs. Fiction on Sun Protection and Healthy Aging

Contact Author Chris Hislop, IMPACT Melanoma

September is Healthy Aging Month in the United States. There are a lot of practices that go into healthy aging, but one to note is skin care and sun protection. How are you recommending sun protection to clients? Include it as part of their healthy aging regimen with the following support.

Sun Protection All Year Long

In the summertime, we think if it’s bright and hot outside, we should put on some sunscreen. However, that leaves us to ask the question of whether this should be an every day mindset. The sun’s UV rays don’t follow a calendar and will still find their way to us even on overcast days. Remember that the sun still shines in fall, winter and spring.

This is a practice that should be started and a part of our daily routine from an early age. While that shift in thinking is starting to occur, it’s growing at a slow pace.

  • A tan is healthy. False. Just because it isn’t a burn does not mean it is healthy.
  • My skin is dark, so I’m protected. Incorrect. UV rays can still penetrate the skin no matter what pigmentation it has.
  • I don’t burn, so I don’t need sun protection. Ouch. No.
  • Sunglasses aren’t important. Inaccurate. Remember your eyes are subjected to UV damage as well.
  • Sun damage is reversible. Negative.
  • The shade fully protects me from the sun. Wrong. While it is a good start, the shade does not provide full protection from the sun or its UV rays.

The 3 Skin Sins: Smoking, Sugar and Stress

Contact Author Marion Simms, SkinSense Wellness

Smoking, sugar and stress are truly the three sins in the skin care world. How do we subvert this terrible triumvirate? Read on and discover how these three sins affect the skin. Learn what spa treatments to offer these clients and what at-home regimens to recommend. Also, find out how to encourage clients to embrace cleaner living habits and maximize their skin’s potential.

I often get asked how smoking directly affects the skin. Even with the knowledge we now have about the harmful effects of nicotine, it seems to be as popular as ever with the proliferation of flavored electronic cigarettes. Smoking is a bad and addictive habit.

8 Steps for a Bridal Look That Lasts

Contact Author Brittney Waugh, Blushed by Brittney Waugh and Willow Spa Suites

Whether it is in the blazing heat or in the middle of a downpour, all brides want to look flawless on their special day. As a makeup artist, this can present multiple obstacles. I practice makeup artistry in Oklahoma, where weather is varied and unpredictable. This has challenged me to put many techniques and products to the test. I have found a routine that has proven to work for me, and I am happy to share these makeup tips to give each of your bridal clients a lasting bridal look.

1. Prep and Prime

You want to have a conversation with your client beforehand about their skin care regimen and skin care concerns. You may need to offer recommendations for dry skin or even oil control. Ask your client to have their skin cleansed thoroughly and to apply the appropriate moisturizer prior to the appointment. Before starting the actual application, I feel the skin to ensure that the skin is adequately hydrated yet not too slick with product.

One thing is clear—consumers and many skin care professionals do not know as much about safe sun as they should. Our profession needs to embrace educating clients on sunscreens, and safe sun needs to become more paramount. There are a myriad of popular misconceptions, even about SPF ratings. It is amazing to think that many consumers and skin care professionals thought an SPF rating of 15 meant that one could safely stay in the sun for 15 hours. SPF is not related to time of solar exposure, but rather the amount of solar exposure which varies based on the time of day. One hour in the sun at 9 am may equate to 15 minutes at 1 pm.

The goal of this article is to provide a primer on sunscreen rules and regulations, what is allowed and what is not coupled with the tortuous and still pending litany of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations governing sunscreens, which are classified as over the counter (OTC) drugs. Our personal safety and the environmental health of the planet are greatly impacted by sun care as is the spiraling cost of health care for increased skin cancer, which is becoming an expensive aspect of health care.

How to Transition for Spring Skin Care

150 150 elaserclinic2016

With the skin-chapping winds and frigid temps almost behind us, it’s time to get excited about new blooms, lighter outfits and yes, new spring skin care! After facing months and months of lower temperatures and humidity and stronger winds and precipitation, your skin will need a bit of an adjustment as you approach the spring. Here are five ways to do so:

1. Exfoliate regularly

The flaking and dry patches have built up on your skin over the chilly season, so it’s time to slough off the dead skin cells and reveal the fresh, new layers underneath for a smoother and radiant complexion. Plus, exfoliating helps all the following skincare products you apply absorb more efficiently. Try ILUMA intense brightening exfoliating powder, which gently buffs away the cells that cause you to appear lackluster and uneven.

2. Switch to a lightweight moisturizer with antioxidants

You probably spent the better part of winter loading up on rich creams to stave off dryness, but you shouldn’t skip moisturizing even when the weather warms up. Try using a deeply hydrating moisturizer that’s lighter in texture, such as our VITAL C hydrating intense moisturizer, which quenches your skin while delivering a rich concentration of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, to help dramatically improve the appearance of discoloration and fine lines. (And as always, don’t forget a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day!)

3. Detox with a mask

Start your spring cleaning with a skin deep clean. To jumpstart your road to smooth, fresh skin, commit to using a mask every week. Because masks “dry” on your face and create an occlusive cover, the nourishing, cleansing and revitalizing properties are delivered more intensely. Our AGELESS total resurfacing masque, called our at-home “mini-peel,” is the perfect post-winter mask, as it exfoliates skin’s surface with a blend of alpha hydroxy acids to help visibly minimize dark spots and dullness.

4. Begin incorporating eye cream

Now that the sun is more apparent and out of winter hiding, you’ll want to take care of your eyes, the most fragile and thinnest area of your skin. Although UV rays are prevalent no matter the season, now you’re physically squinting more against the brightness. Use ILUMA intense brightening eye crème day and night.

5. Take care of your body (now that you can show it off more)

If your face was the only exposed part of your body during the winter, you’re probably looking forward to letting your arms and legs get their fair share of attention, too. Your body deserves nurturing after being wrapped up and hidden the last couple of months, so give it a spa-like exfoliation with BODY SPA exfoliating body scrub and slather it head to toe with BODY SPA rejuvenating body lotion for an all-over glow.

The Myths and Facts of Drinking Collagen Supplements for Youthful Skin

150 150 elaserclinic2016

Many women can remember the first time they saw their reflection and thought, “My skin just isn’t what it used to be.” Whether it’s softening the appearance fine lines or reviving brightness, we all want our skin to look more vibrant. What if there was a magic potion that could make our skin appear younger and fresh?

Collagen supplements aren’t magic, but they could be just the thing you’re looking for. Read on to find out more about drinking collagen—and learn some of the myths and facts about this revolutionary supplement.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is more than just a buzz word. It’s the most common type of protein found in the human body.[1] Collagen occurs naturally in many parts of your body, including your muscles, bones and skin. As a supplement, collagen comes from animal sources such as cows and pigs.

Why Do We Need to Replace Collagen?

There’s a reason younger people have gorgeous skin; simply put, their bodies are producing more collagen. As you age, the amount of collagen your body produces decreases. Starting at age 20, you produce 1 percent less collagen each year.[2] After menopause, women’s bodies make a significantly lower amount of collagen. Less collagen results in reduced elasticity and contributes to the visual appearance of fine lines, dryness and sagging, leading to fine lines, dryness, sagging—and yes, wrinkles.

MYTH: There’s no scientific evidence that collagen supplements work.

FACT: While there isn’t an abundance of research on drinking collagen for youthful skin, there have been some scientific studies with good results.

A 2014 study from the University of Kiel in Germany found that taking a specific collagen peptide improved skin elasticity for women ages 35 to 55.[3] Another study conducted in 2014 in London found that using a specific collagen supplement helped reduce visible signs of aging.[4] Additionally, a 2015 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that oral collagen supplements increased skin moisture after eight weeks.[5]

In the years to come, we can expect more research into the age-defying properties of collagen supplements.

MYTH: Consuming any collagen product will replace collagen in your skin.

FACT: You might have heard the word “peptide” thrown around when it comes to skincare. A peptide is an amino acid chain that your body can actually use.

Collagen comes in many forms and is present in some foods. However, for collagen to be absorbed by your body, it needs to be broken down into peptides. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides are made up of shorter chains that are easy for your body to digest.[6] Before you take a collagen supplement, make sure it contains collagen peptides for easy absorption.

MYTH: It takes a long time to see the results of taking collagen.

FACT: The scientific research on collagen shows that collagen supplements can begin to have a positive effect on the skin after just four weeks.[7]

MYTH: All collagen supplements taste bad.

FACT: Many YANA users say they love our daily collagen shots, which taste like tangy fruit juice. However, if you’re not keen on it, it’s easy to add your daily collagen shot to your morning juice or smoothie to mask the flavor.

MYTH: Collagen is the same as gelatin.

FACT: You may have heard the terms collagen and gelatin used interchangeably, but the two are not the same. Collagen and gelatin are both made from the bones and tissues of animals. As such, they both contain the same amino acids.[8] When collagen is boiled and processed, it becomes gelatin, a substance used in many foods and as a supplement in its own right.

Quick & Simple Long-lasting Makeup Tricks

model with long-lasting makeup

Tip #1: Add In Some Minerals

First and foremost, start using mineral makeup! If you’re already using mineral makeup, you’re one step ahead. Minerals are very water resistant, have minimal transference, are long-lasting and can provide broad spectrum sun protection. They’re the ideal choice when you want to look fabulous all day, and they give the overall appearance of soft, airbrushed skin.

Tip #2: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

moisturizer for long-lasting makeupNow that you’re using mineral makeup, prep your skin with a moisturizer. Minerals adhere best to skin that is hydrated, ensuring your makeup lasts longer. Try our BeautyPrep Face Moisturizer or Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Brightener to infuse moisture into your skin before you apply your makeup.

Tip #3: Powder Your Lips

If you don’t have time (or never remember) to re-apply your lipstick after you eat or drink, fear not! The long-lasting effect of powder mineral foundation works on lips too. Give your lipstick staying-power by applying a thin layer of pressed powder on them before you swipe on your favorite shade. This will keep your lipstick in place, even through your morning coffee.

Tip #4: Prime Your Eyes

eye primer for long-lasting eye makeupIf you find your eye shadow creases by the time you leave work, try using a thin layer of eye primer before you apply your shadow. You can also save time in your morning routine by using Smooth Affair for Eyes eye primer as an eye shadow. Remember, most eye primers are cream formulas, so if you apply too much, they will inevitably crease too.

Tip #5: Set Your Makeup

The easiest, and most refreshing thing you can do to obtain long-lasting makeup is finishing your look with a spritz. Facial mists, like our Hydration Sprays, help set the minerals and create greater adherence to the skin.  Need another reason to add this step to your routine? Some of our hydrating, delightfully scented sprays benefit those effected by breast cancer— 100% of the profits for Lemongrass Love and Smell the Roses goes to Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

You want to look natural, as if you aren’t wearing any makeup, but still feel confident that you look your best. Peaches-Cream-1Mineral Foundation

Great mineral foundations, like our PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation, can be used as both a foundation and a concealer. It also contains broad spectrum SPF to protect you from harmful UV rays and is water resistant for up to 40 minutes!

Peach Eye Shadow & Cream Eye Shadow
(Alternate Uses: Highlighter, Blush and Lip Color)
Select a peach and a cream eye shadow with a little shimmer (we suggest our PurePressed Eye Shadow in Peach Sherbet and Cream). You can use the two colors in multiple ways; in addition to adding color to your eye lids, they quadruple as a highlighter, blush and lip color!.

Pencil Eyeliner
(Alternate Use: Brow Pencil)
A natural brown eyeliner, like our Basic Brown Eye Pencil, is great for lining your eyes, but if you’re a brunette, you could also get away with using it as an eyebrow pencil. If you have lighter hair, we recommend using a lighter colored eyeliner, like taupe.

 Lip Balm

Lip Balm is the best finishing touch to any look. It moisturizes your lips for a supple pout, and if you use our LipDrink Lip Balm with SPF 15, you also get the added bonus of sun protection!
